1000 years as understood by Josephus and friends

Not only does Josephus claim a literal interpretation of the 1000 year lifespans found in the Torah but he also goes as far as claiming that other Antiquated (pun intended) writers all agree with him.  I left my copy of BCS in another city so I can't confirm whether or not the writers mentioned below made an appearance in the BCS research.  Here is the text in question from Chapter 3 of his 1st Book in his series on the Antiquities of the Jews:

"Now when Noah had…

Parousia and Erchomai. Are they the same thing and when do they happen?

(I posted this over on my site as well, but there was some interest in my reference to Watt's book a while back so I thought you might find it interesting and challenging)

It was originally brought to my attention by Isaac Watts, in his book "The Parousia" which was published the same year as Russell's, that we need to think seriously about the implications of the terms "parousia" and "erchomai", and the fact that they don't mean the same thing.  I put that in the back of my…

The Law Before Sinai

So, I'm studying redemption, and researching James Jordan. I come across this paragraph:

"Paul tells us that the law was in operation before Sinai, when he says “for until the law sin was in the world; but sin is not im- puted when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses” (Rem. 5:13, 14a). Before the law “came ,“ the law was already in operation, for it was already dealing death to sin- ners. (Similarly, before the New Covenant “came,…

I listened to Sam Frost's post debate interview session with Joel McDurmon:

It's very late so I will be brief on some of the things that caught my attention:

McDurmon Preston Debate |Joel McDurmon’s Affirmative John 5-28-29 by WILLIAM BELL

McDurmon’s Affirmative Speech

Joel McDurmon attempted to establish in his affirmative that there is a yet future terminal last day, with a limited number of elect Christians being saved after which God’s “finite” redemptive program ends.

John 5:28-29

Joel starts by citing John 5:24-29. He attempts to make a temporal distinction between the imminence which he…

Preston vs McDurmon: Will God’s People Physically Rule on the Earth?

Some thoughts on the debate between Don Preston and Joel McDurmon at the Preterist Pilgrim Weekend (2012). First, I only heard parts of it. As to my position, I am closer to full preterism but disagree that all prophecy was fulfilled at AD 70. I thus have disagreements with both men. I take J.S. Russell’s position that the millennium began at AD 70.   I defend my millennial position at some length in my book on Revelation.  …

“Be Deceitful as your Heavenly Father is Deceitful” (Things Jesus Didn’t Say)

I liked this post by Dr. James F. McGrath he is  Clarence L. Goodwin Chair in New Testament Language and Literature at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. He blogs about religion, the Bible, science fiction, evolution, and lots of other topics.

It struck me powerfully as I replied to a comment on a recent post featuring an infographic about the age of the Earth,…

More Evidence That The Church Has Never Been United on Genesis

Posted by jlwile on July 7, 2011

As I have pointed out previously, the oft-repeated claim that the church has always been united in its interpretation of the creation account is demonstrably false. It sounds reasonable to…

The Metanarratives of Revelation, part II

This is part two of a three-part article in which I am looking at some of the metanarratives of Revelation. This is taken from my book on Revelation. http://www.amazon.com/The-Antichrist-Second-Coming-Examination/dp/1619965798/ref=tmm_pap_title_1

As I discussed, a metanarrative is unifying storyline; it is a bigger story that brings…

New Book Reveals Hidden Poetry and Symbolism in Genesis

Most Old Testament scholars have classified most of Genesis (chapters 4-50) as historical narrative. They may have to rethink this because a new book shows that Genesis is also poetic. This applies not only to the creation account, but also to the stories of Adam and Eve, Cain, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, and Joseph. This poetry is outlined in the newly published book,Return to…

Metanarratives of Revelation part I: A Tale of Two Cities

A metanarrative is a narrative (which is just a fancy word for a story) about a story.  It is a bigger story that helps to unify and explain the little stories contained in a work. You can find more on this concept here: http://soundliving.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Basics-The-Biblical-Metanarrative.pdf  In this paper I will look at some of the metanarratives—the unifying…

More Asah and Bara comments

From a writer at the website: http://www.stenudd.com/myth/genesis/genesis1-first-creation-bible-2.htm

Notice that a word-by-word translation of the Hebrew verse reads: "(In the) beginning filled God the heavens and the earth." To fill and to create are certainly no synonyms. Filling something indicates its preexistence. So, the heavens and the earth seem to be seen as spaces. Barais…

Is Jesus the Light of Creation too?

Is the presence of Jesus is what is being referred to in all the 'light' imagery in the creation account? If so, then it would shed light on views like the following, which are an interesting combo perspective of material creation and comparative myth...

"The light, though, if that is indeed one of God’s characteristics, sets him apart from mankind. The repetition of days passing during God’s creation of the world underlines this difference. He brings light to the world – the one…
