O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

Hymenaeus and Philetus

For years futurist eschatologist have been saying Hymenaeus and Philetus were attempting to
overthrow the faith of the disciples in a "FUTURE PHYSICAL" resurrection . (2 Tim 2:18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.)

However if you continue to read the whole context of what is being said all the way through 2 Tim chapter 2 and 3 up to chapter 4:1, you will see that these two men were attempting to overthrow the faith of the disciples in their , then"PRESENT REALITY "of being "RAISED SPIRITUALLY IN CHRIST", not a "FUTURE PHYSICAL" resurrection, saying it had come and gone and these people were not resurrected . This understanding of 2 tim 2:18 would parallel what was taught in 2nd Peter 3:3

2 Pet 3:3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days "SCOFFERS", walking after their own lusts,
2 Pet 3:4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers FELL ASLEEP, "ALL THINGS CONTINUE AS THEY WERE" from the beginning of the creation.
2 Pet 3:5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
2 Pet 3:6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:

This judgment where the waters overflowed the world which then was, the heavens and earth of old, was a type of the impending judgment which was to come upon the SCOFFERS who denied the "REALITY OF BEING RAISED IN CHRIST" during Pauls time . As you can see from the text of 2 Pet 3:3 - 2 Pet 3:6, the "SCOFFERS" were saying the fathers were still asleep or dead as Jesus explained about Lazarus, he was asleep, yet Jesus said he was dead .
(John 11:11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. John 11:13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.)... and that nothing had changed . Peter goes on to say in the text, that these people were "WILLINGLY IGNORANT" that that world perished being overflowed with water . Why was that world judged ? It was judged because the "SCOFFERS" were denying the resurrection, saying "THE FATHERS STILL SLEPT" and nothing had changed .

Peter goes on to tell of the judgment by fire which was coming upon the heavens and earth which existed in his time.... (2 Pet 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.)........ This is the Old Covenant City Jerusalem which was representative of the SINAI LAW COVENANT which was likened to Babylon in the book of Revelation . She was going to be burned with fire, consumed ........(Gal 4:25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children....... Mat 23:35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. ......Mat 23:36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation....... Mat 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!....... Mat 23:38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. Rev 17:5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH........ Rev 17:6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration. Rev 17:16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and BURN HER WITH FIRE ......... Her rejection of Christ and his "SPIRITUAL RESURRECTION" AND KINGDOM, was the thing which bought fire upon her, just as the "SCOFFERS" of old scoffed and said the fathers still slept and nothing changed, were denying the resurrection .

With this parallel teaching in 2 Pet 3:3 -3:6 we can now get a clear understanding of what was being said in 2 Tim 2:18 - 4:1 . The "SCOFFERS" were Hymenaeus and Philetus saying the resurrection had past and all things continued as they were, being willingly ignorant of "BEING RAISED IN CHRIST SPIRITUALLY" saying the fathers still slept........The very next verse makes much more sense now with this understanding *(2 Tim 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord KNOWETH THEM THAT ARE HIS. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.) The iniquity he spoke of was the denial of the resurrection by Hymenaeus and Philetus, because they were willingly ignorant of the nature of the resurrection . Paul goes on to speak of the impending judgment for those such as Philetus and Hymenaeus (2 Tim 4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; ) Who are the QUICK and who are the DEAD and what is their judgment?

The Quick are those who "THE LORD KNOWETH ARE HIS" they are already alive (QUICKENED) in christ, The Dead are those such as Hymenaeus and Philetus, denying the spiritual resurrection in Christ, saying it had passed and nothings changed according to the parallel in 2 Pet 3:3 . The book of Revelation tells us the Quick are in the lambs book of LIFE (already made alive in Christ), the DEAD are judged according to their works and cast into the LAKE OF FIRE.............(Rev 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works....Rev 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.......Rev 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death...Rev 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

It;s easy to see that those in the lambs book of life are those who "THE LORD KNOWETH ARE HIS", and those not written in the lambs book of life are those such as Hymenaeus and Philetus, scoffing and denying the spiritual resurrection in Christ .

Good work Nancy! You seemed to have answered the call as was Paul's wishes for Timothy in his time of persecution. I just wanted to comment that your article did not go unnoticed and was a blessing for my spirit today as I studyed the second epistle to Timothy as well. Your study certaintly passed the test of reproof, for correction, and instruction in righteousness as Paul instructs in 2 Tim 2:16. I have heard and restated many times over that if you do not study and learn from history then history is doomed to repeat itself, especially such historical text as you are teaching from. An excellant case in point is 2 Tim 3:1-9 when Paul speaks of men being lovers of themselves, blasphemers, etc. and ending in verse 9 with, "but they will progress no further for their folly will be manifest to all as theirs also was. I went a little further in your teaching up to 2 Tim 4:1 and found where Paul drove this point home in 2 Tim 4:2-5 when he speaks of the time to come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires. That is neverending and will always continue to be so, and rightfully so as Paul spoke to the Phillipi church in Phil 2:12, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. As we are called to lift eah other in faith through sound doctrine, you continue to answer the call. Thank you for today's blessing thy faithful servant and always remember the words that Jesus tell us and He consistently reminds me, just remember they hated me first and I noticed just today, that Paul re-iterrated this in 2Tim 2:12.
