Deathisdefeated

O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

I have seen a few preterists tinker with this idea over the years. Not sure if anyone has systematically developed the concept out and what it means for God's people today. Here is my best attempt. The sermon titled "The Lord's Prayer Fulfilled" is #21 in this sermon series:

Tim Martin sermons in Matthew

I was heavily influenced by the following article by Andrew Perriman. The thing that really impresses me is that Perriman put it out about 7 years ago. Well worth a read, even though I take things a bit further in depth than Perriman did. My contemporary application is more specific as well. Here is a link:

The Lord's Prayer In Its Eschatological Context

I'd be interested in any comments or suggestions.

Blessings,

Tim Martin

Hi Tim,

Nice article by Perriman.

In Brian Pitre's "Jesus,The Tribulation And The End Of Exile" he has a section titled The Tribulation in The Lords Prayer where he basically makes some of the same points especially with the  Greek word for temptation  "peirasmos

A couple quotes he uses in making his point.

Ernst Lohmeyer wrote the Lord's Prayer "is concerned with the ideal of eschatologicial temptation" and asserts it's "apocalyptic colouring". The Lord's Prayer"page 204-205

Joachim Jeremias concludes that "temptation" does not mean the little temptations or testings of everyday life, but the final great testing ....the discourse of the mystery of evil, the revelation of the Antichris, the abomination of desolation, the final persecution and testing of God's saints by false savors. "The Prayers of Jesus, page 105-106.

Raymond Brown also interprets peirasmos as referring to a period of unparalleled "tribulation", a "final diabolic onslaught" from what Jesus instructs his disciples to pray for preservation."New Testament Essays",page 316-317

Pitre wrote his book 2005 and like Andrew I don't think he takes things as far as we do it's still nice to see these types of scholars doing this work.

Looking forward to listening to your series on Matthew.

Blessings

John
